Lottie's Story
Lottie Mae began painting for her pleasure and as a way to tell stories. Growing up in South Louisiana Lottie remembers traveling "down east" below the New Orleans area with her grandma and grandpa to visit "kin folk." The scenes she now paints reflect the memories of her youth and the stories she heard as a child. Each work of art is titled with a story and signed. Bobby then makes the frames from cypress for each painting.
She is considered an "Outsider Artist" because she has had no formal training and paints from the heart. Her work is described as primitive paintings with an old Southern style. Her subject matter is most reflective of life's major events such as weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc. The scenes of the day are also an intricate part of her work as well; such as farming and communities gathering to celebrate.
Over the years Lottie has sold more paintings than she ever thought possible. "God has truly blessed me". In 2003 Lottie attempted to retire from painting but is continually drawn back to the canvas. She has slowed down quite a bit in recent years but paints when the mood strikes her.
In the Fall of 2007 Lottie was asked to show her work at the LSU Student Union Art Gallery alongside other outsider artists. Click here for more.
